Scientific and technical documents from the Central State Scientific and Technical Archives Funds of Ukraine as a source for studying the events of the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945s.
Central State Scientific and Technical Archives of Ukraine is created in 1969 to centralize storage of historically significant scientific and technical documents (STD). During 40 years Archives concentrated reference array of 555 227 storage units and became specialized state institution in the field of STD archival preservation.
Type of scientific and technical documentation is specific and many-sided within the National Archival Fund. Cultural value of STD is the specifics of the content associated primarily with its functional purpose. Characteristically, the STD as a source for the study of certain periods of history, in particular the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945s, represents twofold value: 1) it is important the fact of project creation, research conducting; 2) attention is paid to the status of objects recorded in the explanatory notes and reports on scientific research. Given the richness of information, documentary complexes of CDNTA of Ukraine during the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945s can be divided into four groups.
Reports on research performed by Ukrainian scientists during the evacuation, and after returning to the liberated territories, clearly demonstrate activities of scientific institutions during the war and during reconstruction of the economy. The aim of the authors of these developments was to issue in the minimum time ideas required to defeat the enemy and further them to rationalize production.
The research pages contain information about difficult working conditions for scientists during the evacuation, increased production volumes of the East enterprises, the timing and implementation of state orders, staff of workers in enterprises during the war and so on. In this regard for historians have got great value funds of Dnipropetrovsk Iron and Steel Institute (f.-127), Ukrainian Research Institute for Metals "UkrNDImet" (f.-13), Ukrainian State Research Institute for Carbochemistry "UKhIN ( f.-17), State Research Mining Institute (f.-135), Ukrainian Research Refractories Institute (f.-15), Project Research Institute of Heavy Construction "Kharkiv "PrombudNDIprojekt"
(f.-2).
The group of design documents recalls war indirectly. At the forefront comes unique and complex history of the document creation. Particular weight is paid to conditions in which the drawings of tractors and combines, ships and trains, as well as powerful turbines were born.
The most interesting documents are presented in design and engineering projects: acts with detailed description of objects damage, the most rational way to their recovery and reconstruction, precise money calculations for reconstruction, schedules of recovery operations. Projects of post-war times are marked by some reduced form, concise statement of the text (they were adjusted directly during construction). The information is concrete and precise. "Deadwood" of these documents is supplemented by personal funds data. For example, documents from the fund of architect academician O. I. Zavarov (f.-202), one of the authors of Khreschatyk draft restoration, describe the revival of the main Kyiv line are more brightly than actual design documentation.
Drafts of memorials differ from the rest of the documents. Crowing sculpture "Motherland" in Kyiv and the grand diorama "The battle for Dnipro" in Dnipropetrovsk are intended to remind of the victims and the exploits of GPW.
Thus, the documentary complexes of CDNTA of Ukraine are fairly representative to examine the contribution of Ukrainian scientists to the victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945s and to determine the damage caused to large industrial facilities.
